How to apply for a job in Dubai?

There are many different types of jobs available in Dubai in various professions. Placements are also happening in Dubai from the neighboring emirates, countries and from across all other streams.

To apply for a job in Dubai, there are different steps that can be followed. They are as follows:

  1. Apply for a job online, either directly onto the company’s website or through a headhunter or a talent requisition firm.
  2. Respond to job advertisements published in newspapers. These ads are published in local and regional newspapers in different countries, given by the company itself or a headhunter.
  3. Local recruiters hire people on behalf of the parent company/office in Dubai. This is also another way one can get a job in Dubai.
  4. If a company or a relative were to sponsor a visit visa, one can go to Dubai and apply for jobs locally and attend interviews there. If hired, the company would process the work visa.

The temporary jobs scenario in Dubai

In Dubai, the temporary job scene is good and thriving. In fact, there are a whole lot of jobs available in the temp job sector for different fields. Temp jobs are basically, short-term contracts. These temp jobs are also given to migratory labor. Currently, plenty of temp jobs are available in the construction industry, shipbuilding and repairs, oil industry, offshore oil exploration sites, hospitality industry, IT and education sector etc.

A majority of temp workers are hired from outside of Dubai. They are hired by local agencies on behalf of the parent concern. Most temp workers are expatriate workers. They are hired for a certain period of time on short-term contracts which can be renewed. Contracts can range from 3 months to a year. If a person is hired for a project, then he may be retained till that project is over. But his contract is renewed as a temp worker itself. Temp workers do not have a whole lot of benefits and the salaries offered are also quiet low.

How can recruitment agencies aid in finding a job in Dubai?

The recruitment agencies play a major role in placing and finding jobs for people from other countries. These agencies act like middlemen. Different recruitment agencies specialize in certain areas of work. There are agencies who deal exclusively with hiring temp labor or blue-collared workers/laborers. In the wake of the construction boom, lots of laborers are required and they are sourced from nearby countries like, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Philippines, Indonesia, and Africa etc.

There are also headhunters who hire educated, experienced personnel to head different organizations. Also, these agencies hire teachers, nurses, secretarial staff, and accounting personnel etc. to fill in numerous vacancies in organizations across Dubai. In most cases, the people hired do not have to pay any charges. The charges are paid by the company seeking employees. The amount for different cadres and levels varies and is fixed prior to the hiring process.

There are a couple of recruitment agencies within Dubai who help visitors, spouses of residents etc. to find employment if they have the right experience. Moreover, local citizens also avail the services of these agencies to seek employment and they are given preference because they are citizens.

How can sponsors help in finding a job in Dubai?

Any visitor, expatriate or foreigner should have a local sponsor to visit Dubai, live and find a job there.
A sponsor is like a guardian who also stands as a guarantee for all paperwork pertaining to applying for a visit visa or a resident visa, whichever is applicable. The sponsor should also co-sign the tenant agreement, help in opening a bank account etc. The sponsor is not necessarily an individual. It could also be a company. When a person is appointed, then the company hiring is the ‘sponsor.’ The company will fulfill all the formalities pertaining to the person’s visa.

Some people come to Dubai for business purposes. They are generally sponsored by a business partner or the company with whom the person has business interests or dealings. This arrangement is a very useful form of immigration regulation, as the sponsor shoulders all responsibility in the event something goes wrong. One can also seek a job in Dubai directly, if s/he is ‘sponsored.’

What are the working hours in Dubai?

The working hours in Dubai range between the usual 40-48 hours per week and it also depends on the company policy, if any. The office timings are usually between 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. The timings are same throughout the year except during the holy month of Ramadan when they are reduced to 6 hours but it is generally only applicable to Muslim employees as they fast during the day, and not others.

Friday, is an important day especially for religious purposes and so the weekly off is on Friday for all offices and schools. If there is a 5-day week, then the other holiday would either fall on a Thursday or Saturday depending on the company policy.
